I haven't had the chance to peruse them deeply yet, but first impression: Sure, there's some hokey stuff in there, some things that were good to change in later editions. But the first edition really has this sincerity to it, an uncomplicated take on the setting that makes me think that it would actually be a good way to introduce a new player to the setting.
First edition. Dang. I mean: it's a bit broken here and there, and a bit edgy, but you're right: it's almost the last time Vampire wasn't burdened by What Had Gone Before and joining the dots over years of ill-considered flimflam.
